How can I not be just another cog in society?

Almost everyone spends most of their time at work, and is so tired or frustrated when they get home that they just want to kick back, watch some tv, and have a few beers. All of these activities are replaceable; if they quit, the company will just hire someone else to do the same thing. Why even bother being a cog?
